PROJECT: Lewiston - Auburn College
LOCATION: Lewiston, Maine
CLIENT: University of Southern Maine
SERVICES: Architect - Engineer - Construction Manager
The University of Southern
Maine chose a 60,000 square foot metal building, originally built as a tennis club, to be
the campus of its new Lewiston-Auburn College. Designing a completely new facility within
the constraints of the shell of an existing building became one of the most unique
architectural challenges that Platz Associates has faced.
Design and construction was
segmented into two phases. Phase I consisted of 30,000 square feet of educational
facilities. Working closely with University officials, the Platz staff designed major
exterior and interior renovations, did all site planning, and obtained governmental
approvals. When construction began in June 1988, Platz Associates served as Construction
Managers, "fast tracking" construction for completion by the opening of classes
in September 1988. Phase II completed renovations of the entire building. Because
construction could only take place between the end of classes in June 1989 and the start
of classes in September of 1989, Platz Associates once again fast tracked construction for
delivery of a finished product on schedule.
The Lewiston-Auburn College of the University of Maine is
a complete educational facility including classrooms, laboratories, lecture halls,
computer labs, faculty and administrative offices, library, student lounges and cafeteria.
The careful design and construction of this facility resulted in a project which met a
stringent list of initial project goals and criteria.
