PROJECT: Middle & Main The renovation of the former
"Clifford Building" at Middle & Main Streets was part of the revitalization
of Lewiston's downtown business district. The interior of the 25,000 square foot structure
has been completely reconstructed, including the conversion of the cellar area to
appealing office space and the addition of a new fourth floor. In order to be competitive
in the office rental market, the building was brought up to current building and
accessibility standards. This included the installation of an elevator and a new exterior
access to the building. The new entrance design included new site design which provided
more parking and attractive landscaping.

The rehabilitation
of this building included the addition of two stair towers in order to meet lifesafety
codes. The placement of one of the towers outside the existing structure necessitated the
blending of new construction with that done over eighty years ago. Newly designed energy
efficient environmental systems afford the owner flexibility and economy in meeting tenant
needs. This is one of several projects in Lewiston's aging business district where Platz
Associates has had the opportunity to bring new life to tired buildings and allow them to
achieve their potential value. Platz Associates was retained by most of the buildings
tenants to provide design services for their individual spaces.
