Kents Hill School came to Platz
Associates to engage us for the complete renovation of Sampson Hall. Sampson Hall was a
five story dormitory built some time in the late 1800's. As is common with many buildings
of this age, the building no longer met building or life-safety codes and overall served
its owners less then adequately. The renovation required the complete gutting of the
building interior.
The program called
for the placement of a student library and lounges on the first floor while dedicating the
upper floors to student rooms and faculty advisor apartments. It was important that the
integrity of the original Architecture be maintained. In order to meet current life-safety
codes, two new stairwells had to be constructed for safe exiting. We were able to fit one
of the stairways entirely within the existing structure, however, one stairway had to be
added exterior to the original building. This challenge forced us to mesh modern
construction materials and methods to an aging building. The finished product blends with
the original architecture admirably.
Perhaps the trickiest part of this project was that it had
to be done in four separate phases over a four year period. The school's yearly
construction window was from June 1 until September 1. This meant that students would
vacate the building on June 1 and had to be able to reside in it again 90 days later. By
working closely with an experienced construction crew Platz Associates was able to ensure
that these rigid time frames were met. The four year renovation was completed on time and
within the original budget constraints. With the entire renovation now complete it is
hopeful that this building will be able to serve its student population for another 100
years.
